Black water on both sides. MARA and TEO walk the spine of the breakwater, a dive bag between them.
Teo stops at the beacon. He does not look at her.
TEO
The night she went down. I had
the skiff out past the light.
MARA

TEO
Let me say it in order or I
won't say it at all.
A wave breaks against the stones. He waits it out.
TEO
The Larkspur rolled and the water
was full of noise. Then it wasn't.
Then there was one swimmer,
clearing the current where there
shouldn't have been slack.
MARA
Who.
TEO
He came up on the lee side and
let the town count him drowned.
Mara goes very still. The beacon sweeps across them, and away.
MARA
Nine years.
TEO
Nine years.
She doesn't shout. That is the frightening part. She picks up the dive bag and walks toward the lights of town, leaving him with the water.
